March 21, 2016
By Katie Valentine

Record-breaking (click here) temperatures in Australia have triggered a severe coral bleaching event in the Great Barrier Reef, threatening coral survival in the World Heritage site.
Australia’s government raised the bleaching threat for the Great Barrier Reef to its highest level Sunday, after researchers said earlier this month that bleaching off the coast of northern Australia was the worst they’d seen in 15 years. This comes as Australia has been seeing strong summer and fall heat, with early March high temperatures about 4 degrees Celsius hotter than normal.
Coral bleaching occurs when stressed corals expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues. The algae gives coral its pigment, so without it, the coral turns white. High ocean temperatures make coral more susceptible to bleaching, and bleached corals are at higher risk of death, especially if water temperatures don’t fall enough for the coral to recover.
“The corals in the remote far north of the Reef experienced extremely hot and still conditions this summer, and were effectively bathed in warm water for months, creating heat stress that they could no longer cope with,” Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Chairman Russell Reichelt said in a statement....

It is either us or them. We did all the hard work already, evidently, all the wacko right wingers haven't done theirs. They just leverage power for votes.

Apple today (click here) has spoken out against a controversial new bill in Mississippi that was signed into law by the state’s governor earlier this week. House Bill 1523 is spun as protecting religious freedom but has been criticized for enabling LGBT discrimination. Apple today has joined a variety of technology companies in voicing its opposition to the law....

....Apple has been vocal about other laws similar to the Mississippi one, as well. A year ago, the company and CEO Tim Cook spoke out against controversial religious freedom laws in Indiana and Arkansas. Tim Cook even penned an open-letter in the Washington Post to reiterate Apple’s stance. Cook at the time said that the laws were “dangerous” and that they echoed the days of racial segregation. Additionally in 2014, Apple joined a variety of companies in urging the governor of Arizona to veto a religious freedom bill....

People all over this country stood with the LGBTQ community because it was the right thing to do. Now, the righty wackos need votes and they are playing with the legislatures. The wacko laws won't be heard at the Supreme Court this year so the Righties look as though they have a better idea that will win the day. It is politics. There is no basis for the law.

It is encouraging to have American companies standing with the American poeple to make a statement about hatred. Make no doubt about this, it is hate legislation.

Mike Pence is being asked by women in Illinois to keep an official mense calender to let them know when it is safe to have sex, oh excuse me, make love with their husbands.

Last month, (click here) Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed a law imposing new limitations on abortion.
And since then, women have been sending Pence a message.
Well, a lot of messages — about their menstrual flow, and their cramps, and their birth control, and their tampon discomfort, and their bloating, and their menopause....

The Wacko Righties think they are going to be re-elected if they pass bogus legislation. They don't believe in the law and the country, they believe in power.

Make this year their last year in office. Kick 'em out. Bernie Sanders didn't need corporations to run for President of the USA. Where are all the Occupy Wall Streeters living in Illinois?

$1 millon bond. I assume he states he is not guilty.

A 17 year old man has family. Where is his family. I don't care if he is an uncle twice removed on his mother's side. There is a family somewhere.

Police in Austin (click here) have arrested a 17-year-old homeless teenager and accused him of murdering a female freshman at the University of Texas. Officials announced on the morning of April 8 that Meechaiel Criner had been taken into custody and accused of killing Haruka Weiser on April 3. The arrest came one day after Weiser had been identified as the person who was found dead at the school in Austin on April 5.
Weiser was first reported missing on April 4, having not been seen since April 3, two days before her body was found in the Waller Creek area of the University of Texas. The area is close to the school’s alumni center....

That video is it? The body was found two days after she disappeared. Her body was found on campus. And the man with a bicycle is the suspect. 48 hours is a long time. The evidence should be interesting.

Waller Creek (click here) is a thin, urban riparian ecosystem that meanders from the northern part of Austin southward through UT campus and along the eastern edge of the downtown area before it meets Lady Bird Lake. The Waller Creek Conservancy, in a unique public-private partnership with the City of Austin, acts as the steward of Waller Creek by playing a vital role in the preservation, redevelopment and maintenance of the creek’s surrounding parks, nearby businesses, adjoining neighborhoods and community at large.

I've read three articles so far and didn't see one mention of cause of death. Where did she live? Was she on her way to home or school? No one saw her along that area?

Bernie is in it to win it. He is not a gratuitous candidate. I solidly believe he is very worried for the USA.

Okay. I give everyone permission to call each other names and make a spectacle of the Democrats and make the GOP look like they actually know what they are doing.
Go, ahead.
Don't expect me to participate. I didn't participate in the 2008 primaries either! I don't specialize in falsehood and nonsense. I rather read about the heroes in Pakistan and examine satellite to perfection. Earth is a disaster. Australia is in autumn with some of the highest temperatures in history.

Yep. If one looks on this blog for 2008 primaries you wont' find anything interesting. I think I liked an article about Hillary's pantsuits.

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders (click here) explained in an interview with ABC News today how in the span of just a few days he suggested that his opponent, Hillary Clinton, was both qualified and unqualified to be president.
“In a sense it’s both,” he told ABC News' Cecilia Vega while touring the neighborhood in Brooklyn where he grew up.
Sanders questioned Clinton’s judgment on several key issues, including her vote in favor of the war in Iraq, what he called her “dependence” on super PACs and Wall Street money as well as her position on trade agreements like NAFTA.
“Is that person who has that kind of bad judgment qualified to be president of the United States?” Sanders asked. “Well, qualified is a broad word, but I think that judgment lapse suggests that, you know, she might not be the best president that we need.”...
Ryan and Cruz are not electable.

Do Americans know how completely unworkable their policies are? It is nonsense. When Ryan balanced his so called budget he included all the taxes in the ACA while stating he was going to recall the law.

Give me a break already.

The USA has problems.

Spacex conquered the problems of saving a rocket booster to make the company more profitable and to recycle their resources to achieve a moral company. Spacex has done the impossible. It is a viable company with a conscience. That is the American spirit at work.

Ryan and Cruz don't even understand the American spirit. They only know extremism and hubris.

All that excitement over a Ryan video nearly put me to sleep.

Ya, wanna try reporting some real news. That would really be novel.

Well done.

It is truly an easily recoverable stage rocket. It sure is easier than fishing it out of the ocean.

The African AMERICAN Community believes the space for dialogue in society is shrinking.

The community is convinced the "Super Predator" myth is actually still a part of policing.

April 7, 2014
The New York Times (click here) reported this week on the "superpredator" myth, which 20 years ago led nearly every state in the country to expand laws that removed children from juvenile courts and exposed them to adult sentences, including life without parole.
A documentary by Retro Report, The Superpredator Scare, tells the story of how influential criminologists in the 1990s issued predictions of a coming wave of "superpredators": "radically impulsive, brutally remorseless" "elementary school youngsters who pack guns instead of lunches" and "have absolutely no respect for human life." Much of this frightening imagery was racially coded....

Spring 1996

Violent crime is down in New York (click here)  and many other cities, but there are two big reasons to keep the champagne corked. One is that murder, rape, robbery, and assault remain at historic highs: the streets of Manhattan, like those of Houston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, and Los Angeles, remain much less safe today than in the 1950s and 1960s. Worse, though policing and prison policies matter, nothing affects crime rates more than the number of young males in the population—and by the year 2010, there will be about 4.5 million more males age 17 or under than there were in 1990: 8 percent more whites and 26 percent more blacks. Since around 6 percent of young males turn out to be career criminals, according to the historical data, this increase will put an estimated 270,000 more young predators on the streets than in 1990, coming at us in waves over the next two decades. Numerous studies show that each succeeding generation of young male criminals commits about three times as much serious crime as the one before it: the occasional fatal knife fight of 1950s street gangs has given way to the frequent drive-by shootings of 1990s gangs.

The second reason to keep the champagne corked is that not only is the number of young black criminals likely to surge, but also the black crime rate, both black-on-black and black-on-white, is increasing, so that as many as half of these juvenile super-predators could be young black males. But just when we need to think most earnestly about black crime, the space for honest discourse about race and crime is shrinking. The evidence of that shrinkage is everywhere: in the lickety-split O.J. verdict and its racially polarized aftermath, in the utter certitude of many blacks that the justice system is rigged against them, in the belief of many whites that violent crime is synonymous with black crime and the fear they feel of every young black male passerby not wearing a tie or handcuffs.

What has made our views on race and crime so polarized—and often so out of touch with reality? What are the facts about race and crime? And what are Americans, blacks and whites together, to do about it?...

The death of Tamir Rice screams this "Super Predator" mess out loud. This death and others sincerely has the community concerned for their children. There is no stopping a police officer in this video. I am using the word concerned, that is understated. Tamir is a prime example of why the African American community fears for their young people.

This is such a delicate subject, no matter what I write I know I'll screw it up.

Blinded by Sight: (click here) Seeing Race Through the Eyes of the Blind Paperback – December 11, 2013

The African AMERICAN community strongly objects to face recognition programs.

They object to the programs, not for the reasons one might think, but, because of the programming that on occasion identifies them as gorillas. It doesn't stop there. These programs are based on finding EXISTING CRIMINALS. There is no getting away from being a suspect.

The programming is faulty in even searching the faces of African AMERICANS.

The FBI needs to do better and seek out the participants at the Georgetown Summit today and take on the challenge of race in the United States.

June 27, 2013 -
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (click here) is suing the FBI over access to its facial recognition records, based on three FOIA requests the group made a year ago.
Acording to a statement on the group’s website, since early 2011, EFF has been closely following the FBI’s work to build out its Next Generation Identification (NGI) database, which is set to replace and expand upon the existing integrated automated fingerprint identification system.  The face recognition component of the NGI database is set to launch in 2014.
“NGI will result in a massive expansion of government data collection for both criminal and noncriminal purposes,” EFF Staff Attorney Jennifer Lynch, who testified before the U.S. Senate on the privacy implications of facial recognition technology in July of last year said. “Biometrics programs present critical threats to civil liberties and privacy. Face-recognition technology is among the most alarming new developments, because Americans cannot easily take precautions against the covert, remote, and mass capture of their images.”...

President Obama chose a controversial man for Surgeon General, Vivek Muephy.

President Obama was not on a tirade against gun owners and manufacturers. The African American community want a Public Health approach to violence prevention in their neighbor hoods.

President Obama's (click here) pick to serve as the next surgeon general was confirmed Monday evening more than a year and half after being nominated, the first of nearly a half dozen of the president's picks set for confirmation this week as Democrats prepare to cede control of the U.S. Senate.
Senators voted 51 to 43 to confirm Vivek Murthy, a Harvard and Yale-educated doctor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, whose nomination had been in limbo amid concerns about his experience, and opposition from the gun lobby.
As surgeon general, Murthy, 37, will serve as the nation’s top spokesperson on public health issues. Boris Lushniak has served as acting surgeon general since July 2013....

Civil Libertarians will blot and run at the thought public health is best decided by employees of the government. Rand Paul needs to realize how far he has come to back changes to incarceration guidelines. There is more, Senator Paul.

The focus of public health (click here) is on the health, safety and well-being of entire populations. A unique aspect of the field is that it strives to provide the maximum benefit for the largest number of people.
Public health draws on a science base that is multi-disciplinary. It relies on knowledge from a broad range of disciplines including medicine, epidemiology, sociology, psychology, criminology, education, and economics.1 This broad knowledge base has allowed the field of public health to respond successfully to a range of health conditions across the globe.
The field also emphasizes input from diverse sectors including health, education, social services, justice, policy and the private sector.1 Collective action on the part of these stakeholders can help in addressing problems like violence.

The public health approach is a four-step process that is rooted in the scientific method. It can be applied to violence and other health problems that affect populations.

Eugene Puryear, is a remarkably well spoken man, but, he definitely needs a professional website.

“Radicals (click here) should not simply support the ‘best available’ candidates in elections, but present themselves for office,” says Eugene Puryear, the Washington, DC, activist profiled by in this issue by Dr. Coleman Adebayo. Puryear believes radicals engaged in electoral politics must “advocate and agitate as loudly and clearly as possible for our ‘side’ in the struggle, the side of the exploited and oppressed.”...

The political Right Wing in the USA use icons for their politics. Police are a very big icon for them. The political Right Wing needs to find an African American like Eugene Puryear to set their heads straight.

He has a linked in page. Give him a job. He'll get your attention!

"Separate, but, equal'

We are told by Republican extremists to protect ourselves with a gun...unless...your black.

In an alley in Denver, (click here) police gunned down a 17-year-old girl joyriding in a stolen car. In the backwoods of North Carolina, police opened fire on a gun-wielding moonshiner. And in a high-rise apartment in Birmingham, Ala., police shot an elderly man after his son asked them to make sure he was okay. Douglas Harris, 77, answered the door with a gun.
The three are among at least 385 people shot and killed by police nationwide during the first five months of this year, more than two (deaths of Americas) a day, according to a Washington Post analysis. That is more than twice the rate of fatal police shootings tallied by the federal government over the past decade, a count that officials concede is incomplete.
“These shootings are grossly underreported,” said Jim Bueermann, a former police chief and president of the Washington-based Police Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving law enforcement. “We are never going to reduce the number of police shootings if we don’t begin to accurately track this information.”...

I don't know where to begin.

Our country (click here) is waking up to the pervasiveness and brutality of policing in black communities. At the same time, we are engaged in the most important surveillance debate in a generation. Conversations about these trends rarely intersect.
On April 8, 2016, Georgetown Law and the Center on Privacy & Technology will hold a landmark conference to begin bridging that gap. Entitled The Color of Surveillance: Government Monitoring of the African American Community, the conference will explore the role of law enforcement and national security surveillance in the relationship between African Americans and their government – beginning with the colonial era and continuing to the present day....

Everyone interested in ending the violence of our black neighborhoods should watch this CPAN2 event in it's entirety.

How do we deprogram a young black person who has been told in a wide variety of ways they were unworthy of their presence in society. There exists Police Books that include innocent people IN CASE they commit a crime. When do we, in the USA, stop telling young black people they are nothing but trouble?

There is an entire culture in black communities that reinforce oppression and the message they aren't worth it. What is worth is the spending of billion and billion of US dollars over decades of time to create and reinforce that very culture. "The White Man" has caused that community suffering in ways no other people in the USA experience life.

Ferguson is all part of it. I know Ferguson is repeated across the USA. I know it for a fact. Sandra Bland was going to happen. That was her destiny.

There are separate cultures in this country based in racial bias and hatred and ENFORCED by control.

Sandra was told over and over in many ways she was not worth it. That travesty of a policeman was self-righteous for a reason.

Paris attacks suspect Mohamed Abrini (click here) was arrested Friday, a police source said as Belgian authorities announced they had detained several people in connection with the deadly Brussels airport and metro bombings.
The police source gave no details of the location or circumstances of Abrini's arrest but VRT television said it took place in the Anderlecht district of the Belgian capital which was home to several other suspects now linked to both the Paris and Brussels attacks.
Abrini, 31, a Belgian of Moroccan descent, was caught on film at a motorway service station en route to Paris shortly before the November 13 killings with another suspect, the now detained Salah Abdeslam.
Abdeslam, whose brother Brahim blew himself up in Paris, was arrested March 18 in Brussels, not far from his family's home in the Molenbeek district of the capital.

Once again Molenbeek comes to the forefront of another terrorist arrest. I cannot state often enough how poverty plays into the estrangement of these men.

I tend to think of impoverished communities as isolated from main street society. It is not difficult for a corrupt and/or angry holy man to instill the idea of revenge against society in the name of Allah.

Religious leaders should have answers for men or women seeking a better quality of life. They need to be able to help with real opportunity such as a school or training for employment. Their answers should never be to carry out revenge in the name of Daesh, therefore displacing Allah into the identity of a criminal genocidal terrorist regime. Is there anything more warped than that?

In the case of the men carrying out killing in the name of Allah, including a migrant from Syria that came through Greece, they were lead to believe there was elevated purpose for them against the very societies where they lived. That is so deranged, but, a former Saddam Ba'athist has done exactly that. He has taken the purity of a men's spiritual relationship with Allah and turned it into a perverse idea of justice by death of others and death of themselves.

Such a reality of a person is disgusting. To realize a person's mind can become their own worst enemy as well as the enemy of their society. Religious leaders should be capable of hope and encouragement. They should be empowered by their society to find good outcomes for their flocks. A holy man's value should lie in the ability to foster happiness and well being within their congregations. A holy man should be interested in solving their problems and not creating them.

Molenbeek became a haven for hatred. It was easier to achieve than anyone could imagine. It is so outrageous to realize this impoverished community found purpose in killing.

Europe has to invest in their religious leaders to empower them to move their communities into hope and accomplishment and to dispel hate. The funding for it might come from those interesting offshoring outposts. It would actually put those monies to work for sincerely needed community reform.

It has taken until now to apprehend the murderer because there is an aspect of that community invested in success of the death of others. That has to stop. The community in Molenbeek has to align itself with their leadership and not a angry holy man instilling hatred. The community has to give up the idea of finding purpose in causing death. They need better outcomes in their lives. I am worried for Europe.

FBI informants.

Ernest Withers  (click here) lived and photographed in Memphis, TN, a crossroad for the Civil Rights Movement. Withers also documented the music scene on Beale Street, the Negro Baseball League and black social life in Memphis.

Withers played a key roll in the Civil Rights Movement as a result of his photographic document of the Emmett Till trial. He was witness to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Medgar Evers Funeral, the Integration of Little Rock High School, the Memphis Sanitation Workers' Strike and the Martin Luther King, Jr. assassination and funeral.

"Make Malcolm X's life matter." This was from the speaker. Evidently, the scholars of The Nation cannot piece enough information together to declare a killer until all the USA's information I provided unredacted.

A short film/dramatization (click here) promoting a (widely-believed) (click here) theory which exposes the alleged shotgun assassin, former Nation of Islam enforcer, and local "stickup man", William Bradley (Mustafa Shabazz) who was named in an affidavit by the only confessed assassin (Talmadge Hayer, in 1977 and 1978 while serving time for the Malcolm X killing) as being the individual who fired the 12-gauge shotgun blast, which actually killed Brother Malcolm X on 2/21/65. Several books written about Malcolm's assassination have also connected this man to the killing of Brother Malcolm. Bradley/Shabazz still lives in Newark, NJ., and is the co-owner of the First Class Championship Development Center, a boxing gym located at 936 Bergen Street there. He has never publicly or directly answered serious questions about his alleged role in Brother Malcolm's murder...now is the time (after 47-plus years) to put Mr Bradley/Shabazz in the spotlight, since there is no statute of limitations on capital murder.

End the skepticism. Skepticism creates danger to those under suspicion. Provide the information to scholars within the community and bind them to secrecy. Once the scholars have determined the information they need, the future will be promising when the information is open to the public. This is ridiculous. African American Scholars can't be trusted?

It took the curiosity of a skinny, fidgeting 27-year-old (click here) to force the Chicago Police Department to admit they purchased controversial surveillance technology. The department, legally boxed into a corner over its use of a device known as the StingRay, finally admitted to acquiring the cell-phone tracking product last summer, six years after actually buying the thing. The watchdog work came not from a newspaper or any other media outlet in the city, but Freddy Martinez, an information technology worker who oversees websites for a private company from a downtown office building.
Martinez is now in the midst of his second lawsuit against the Chicago police over their refusal to disclose how they actually use the StingRay. These types of devices can capture, track, and monitor cell phone data, even without judicial oversight. Over a burger and whiskey-ginger at a bar in Chicago's Loop district, Martinez described the relatively benign circumstances that led him to become a plaintiff against the Chicago police, in the process costing city taxpayers a bit more than $120,000 in fees to defend the law enforcement agency....

These 'boxes' of information can be made at home. Police are using them without a judges order. It takes all the electronic data from any personal devise someone is carrying them or otherwise.

There is a conference on surveillance and race on C-Span2 (click here).

What defenders of law enforcement will say it that the bad guy have this so why should law enforcement be hampered? Really? Law enforcement has resources the bad guys don't, like prison.

...G20 world leaders (click here) have made a start with a joint commitment to increase corporate transparency. The United Kingdom is leading the way, mandating public disclosure of the true owners – the “beneficial owners” – of UK companies. The European Union has followed, directing its members to obtain beneficial ownership information for EU corporations and make it available to persons with a “legitimate interest,” including law enforcement and journalists. Implementing that directive is the next step for the European Union.

The United States is far behind. We now require more information to get a library card than to form a US corporation. That may be why the Panama law firm had a Nevada office. Bipartisan legislation pending in the US Congress requiring the collection of beneficial ownership information for US corporations has languished despite law enforcement pleas for action. The biggest impediment is opposition from the secretaries of state of our 50 states, who financially benefit from forming new corporations and don’t want to ask questions that might jeopardize their revenue. Our states need to wake up to the damage they are doing and stop forming corporations with hidden owners....

In a March 12 letter, Sen. Bob Corker, (click here) a senior member of the Senate Banking Committee, raised concerns about whether the Financial Stability Oversight Council would wind down a healthy institution due to concerns regarding whether the bank is "too big to fail."
The Tennessee Republican pointed to section 121 of the Dodd-Frank reform law asking ten voting members of the FSOC whether the provision means "that an institution has to be unhealthy to pose a threat to the financial system."
"Section 121 of the law dictates that the FSOC can vote to order the Federal Reserve Board to break up an institution if the Fed finds that it's unable to 'mitigate a threat to the financial stability of the United States,'" writes American Banker's Victoria Finkle.
Corker also raised the issue at a confirmation hearing Tuesday for Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Richard Cordray.
"Is it your understanding that the FSOC has the ability to wind down an institution, even if it's healthy, because it poses a threat to our country, if it were to have problems?" Corker asked Cordray.
Cordray responded that the group has not discussed the issue at meetings he's attended, stating that "it's been an assumption that the failure of an institution, or the impending failure of an institution, and therefore the eminent weakness of the institution, would itself pose a potentially systemic threat to the financial system."...

(CNSNews.com) - Bernie Sanders (click here) says he's a "big, big fan" of
Pope Francis, who has invited him to speak at a Vatican conference on April 15.
"I was very moved by the invitation, which just was made public today," the
Jewish senator told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Friday.
"Obviously there are areas where we disagree on," Sanders said, pointing to
"women's rights" and "gay rights."
"But he has played an unbelievable role -- an unbelievable role -- of injecting
the moral consequence into the economy.
"You know, people think Bernie Sanders is radical? Uh-unh. Read what the pope

"What he is saying is not only that we have to pay attention to what he calls

...Daily NewsOkay. Well, would you name, say, three American corporate giants that are destroying the national fabric? (click here)
SandersJPMorgan Chase, and virtually every other major bank in this country.
Let me be very clear, all right? I believe that we can and should move to what
Pope Francis calls a moral economy.
Right now, there are still millions of people in this country who are suffering the results of the greed, recklessness and illegal behavior on Wall Street. And when you have companies like Goldman Sachs and many other major banks reaching settlements with the United States government, as you're aware, for many billions of dollars, this is an implicit admission that they have engaged in illegal activity.
Daily News: I understand that. I wanted to draw a distinction, though. Because in your speech you mention the financial industry and you focused on corporate America, the greed of Wall Street and corporate America. So I wanted to get a sense of corporate America, as the agent of American destruction.
Sanders: General Electric, good example. General Electric was created in this country by American workers and American consumers. What we have seen over the many years is shutting down of many major plants in this country. Sending jobs to low-wage countries. And General Electric, doing a very good job avoiding the taxes. In fact, in a given year, they pay nothing in taxes. That's greed.
That is greed and that’s selfishness. That is lack of respect for the people of this country....
