That gray shaded area is simply a part of the satellite picture that didn't download for whatever reason.

When I first started this blog I would look at the ice continent daily. The blog was more structured and disciplined. I've never seen it like this, though. It is all heat and plenty of it causing these exceptionally large volumns of water vapor turbulence. It is nearly so dense the continent is indiscernible.
